Answer first
On iPhone, save a video you are allowed to use to the Files app, open Instagram Transcript in Safari or another modern browser, choose the saved file, and start transcription. The browser handles the audio locally. This works when you already have the file; it is not a way to fetch a private post or download a Reel from a URL.
Step-by-step
- Save the video to Files, preferably in its original quality.
- Open the transcript tool in your browser.
- Tap the file area and choose the video from Files.
- Select the spoken language if auto-detection is uncertain.
- Keep timestamps for captions or quotes; choose plain text for notes.
What can go wrong on a phone?
Long videos and high-resolution files use more memory, so an older phone may take longer or close the tab. Music, low volume, and overlapping speakers can also reduce recognition quality. If the important words are printed on screen rather than spoken, you need OCR in addition to speech transcription.
Why use a browser workflow?
A browser workflow avoids installing another app and makes the privacy boundary easy to understand: the selected file is processed in the tab and the working result disappears when the tab is closed. It is a good fit for a one-off transcript, a private draft, or a clip you do not want uploaded to a service.
Choose an export
Use TXT for notes, SRT for subtitle editors, and VTT for web video players. Keep timestamps on until you have finished checking names, numbers, and unclear sections.
