How to convert captions between SRT and VTT
SRT and VTT both preserve timed caption cues, but they are not identical. Choose the format your next tool expects, then check timing and text after conversion.
Pick the format by destination
- SRT: widely accepted by editors and upload forms; cues use numbered blocks.
- VTT: designed for web video; it begins with a WEBVTT header and supports web-oriented cue features.
Neither format improves the underlying words. Start with a reviewed instagram transcript before converting.
To create timed subtitle text from an audio recording, see audio to subtitles; for the broader SRT or VTT export workflow, see the subtitle generator.
What changes during conversion
Numbers and headers may be added or removed, and timestamp punctuation can differ. Some tools also change line breaks or discard styling. Keep a copy of the original export so you can compare the converted file.
Check the converted file
- Open the file as text and confirm the header or cue numbering is valid.
- Play the video and watch the first, middle, and final cues.
- Look for overlaps, cues that flash too quickly, and lines that are too long.
- Replay names, numbers, and words under music.
Do not confuse format with accuracy
A clean SRT or VTT file can still contain a wrong word. Keep uncertain audio marked, and keep on-screen text separate from speech. Format conversion is the last step after content QA, not a substitute for it.
